In June 2024 members of the Isaac Newell Heritage Group (INHG) met with Allison Young, the Community Project Co-ordinator at Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust, and who advises Medway Council on arts and cultural projects. The meeting explored the next steps regarding the position of the Isaac Newell statue, how it should be commissioned and how to go about raising funds.
Following that meeting, it was agreed that INHG member, Jon Rye would guide the group through the process, given his considerable experience with projects of this type, and his organisation of the 2022 exhibition Isaac Newell: More than a Name. Jon began by setting up a timeline and re-named the project Operation Statue, or OpStat. On 16 July the INHG met once again with Medway Council and the Medway Development Company to discuss the project’s progress. The statue will be a huge draw for tourists, boosting the local economy, but it is essential that Isaac’s legacy is portrayed correctly and appropriately within the development. To this end, Group members Cindy O’Halloran and Sandra Fowler are devising a heritage trail which will have the statue as its focal point. Shortly after this meeting, Dr Alexander Thomas submitted an application to Historic England’s national blue plaque scheme, to recognise 5 High Street, Strood, the Newell family home in 1851. En junio de 2024, miembros del Grupo del Legado de Isaac Newell (INHG, por sus siglas en inglés) se reunieron con Allison Young, Coordinadora de Proyectos Comunitarios en Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust, quien además asesora al Ayuntamiento de Medway en proyectos artísticos y culturales. La reunión sirvió para explorar los próximos pasos en relación con la ubicación de la estatua de Isaac Newell, cómo debería encargarse su realización y cómo recaudar fondos.
Tras esa reunión, se acordó que el miembro del INHG, Jon Rye, guiaría al grupo durante el proceso, dada su amplia experiencia en proyectos de este tipo y su organización de la exposición de 2022 Isaac Newell: Más que un Nombre. Jon comenzó estableciendo un cronograma y renombró el proyecto como Operación Estatua, u OpStat. El 16 de julio, el INHG se reunió nuevamente con el Ayuntamiento de Medway y la Medway Development Company para discutir el progreso del proyecto. La estatua será un gran atractivo turístico, lo que impulsará la economía local, pero es esencial que el legado de Isaac se represente de forma correcta y apropiada dentro del desarrollo. The Isaac Newell Heritage Group attended a Statue Summit Meeting with Medway Council on 8 May 2024. Amanda Thomas and Jon Rye presented the case, and the Council agreed in principle to erect a statue in Strood as part of the new waterfront development.
Jon Rye created a brochure to accompany the bid, the cover of which was designed by Dr Alexander Thomas using AI to visualise the statue (pictured). The figure in bronze holds a football in one hand and an open book in the other, embodying Isaac Newell’s vision for young people everywhere. His foresight of combining education with sport is his legacy and continues to be used in youth academies worldwide. The statue will be situated close to Isaac’s birthplace in Taylor’s Lane and his childhood home in the High Street. El Grupo del Legado de Isaac Newell asistió a una Cumbre sobre la Estatua con el Ayuntamiento de Medway el 8 de mayo de 2024. Amanda Thomas y Jon Rye presentaron la propuesta, y el Ayuntamiento acordó, en principio, erigir una estatua en Strood como parte del nuevo desarrollo en la ribera.
Jon Rye creó un folleto para acompañar la propuesta, cuya portada fue diseñada por el Dr. Alexander Thomas utilizando inteligencia artificial para visualizar la estatua (en la imagen). At the end of January 2024, Adrian Pope and Amanda Thomas spent a day supporting Kent University student Oliver Small and his colleague Cecilia Kang. Oliver had contacted Adrian about making a documentary film, as part of his course work, but which might also later be uploaded to YouTube.
Whilst it was a bitterly cold day, Oliver filmed some key elements of the documentary, including an interview with Adrian. Later, and with the help of The Medway Archives Centre in Strood, Oliver conducted further interviews and was given permission to use archival material to help chart the history of Isaac Newell’s life. In December 2023, following the inaugural meeting of the Isaac Newell Heritage Group (INHG), Amanda Thomas began looking into the records for the Newell family home in Taylor’s Lane, Strood, where Isaac was born in 1853. An individual house was not recorded on any official documents, an indication that the tenement-style houses in Taylor’s Lane were not numbered. Moreover, the houses which lined the alley on both sides were demolished at the beginning of the twentieth century when the first factory was built for the engineering company, Aveling and Porter.
However, 5 High Street, Strood is identified in the 1851 Census as the address of the Newell family, two years before Isaac was born. Isaac’s father, Joseph, was a fishmonger and early photographs of Strood High Street confirm this stretch close to Taylor’s Lane has always been occupied by shops, moreover it is possible that the Newell family lived above the fishmonger’s. The building which was number 5 in 1851 is still standing and in 2024, the INHG applied for a blue plaque to acknowledge this important place. No se encontró ninguna casa individual registrada en documentos oficiales, lo que indica que las casas de estilo cuartel en Taylor’s Lane no estaban numeradas. On the suggestion of Sandra Fowler, the Isaac Newell Heritage Group (INHG) was formed in late 2023 and met for its inaugural meeting on 6 December 2023 at the Medway Archives Centre (MAC). Group members comprise those with an interest in perpetuating the memory of Isaac Newell (1853-1907), and with the prime aim to erect a statue of him on the Strood waterfront; Adrian Pope (far right in the photograph) has been working towards this for the past 20 years. The members of the INHG include (in alphabetical order): Margarita Bitetti (Newell’s great great granddaughter), Len Feist, Rob Flood, Sandra Fowler, Elaine Gardner, Helen Worthy (Medway Archives Centre Manager), Adrian Pope, Cindy O’Halloran, Alex Thomas, and Amanda Thomas. At the meeting in December, it was agreed Margarita Bitetti would be the group’s President.

Por sugerencia de Sandra Fowler, el Grupo del Legado de Isaac Newell (INHG, por sus siglas en inglés) se formó a finales de 2023 y celebró su reunión inaugural el 6 de diciembre de 2023 en el Centro de Archivos de Medway (MAC). Los miembros del grupo están conformados por personas interesadas en perpetuar la memoria de Isaac Newell (1853–1907), con el objetivo principal de erigir una estatua en su honor en la ribera de Strood; Adrian Pope (a la derecha en la fotografía) ha estado trabajando en este proyecto durante los últimos 20 años. Los miembros del INHG incluyen (en orden alfabético): Margarita Bitetti (tataranieta de Newell), Len Feist, Rob Flood, Sandra Fowler, Elaine Gardner, Helen Worthy (directora del Centro de Archivos de Medway), Adrian Pope, Cindy O’Halloran, Alex Thomas y Amanda Thomas. On the evening of 7 November 2022, a new exhibition opened at Rochester’s Guildhall Museum entitled, Isaac Newell: More than a Name. Curated by Jon Rye, external Sports Consultant to Medway Sport, the idea was the brainchild of Adrian Pope. The exhibition was officially opened by Isaac Newell’s great great granddaughter, Margarita Bitetti, a musician who now lives in Italy:
“The family is grateful that Isaac Newell, his name and his legacy are finally returning to his homeland. The name Newell is recognized throughout the world for football, and thanks to this exhibition the pioneer Isaac Newell has finally begun to be recognized in the UK. We hope that this exhibition will be the first of many collaborations between our family and the English institutions to keep the exchange on the figure of Isaac Newell active. Football was meant to be part of a more comprehensive educational project that Isaac and his wife Ann Margaret (born in London of a German family) carried out for decades. The Anglo-Argentine school was the first bilingual educational institution in Argentina where sports, finance, arts and music were taught together. Such tradition continues to this day in the family. I would like to thank everybody of you for giving me to opportunity to talk about Isaac Newell here in Rochester.” The exhibition is now on permanent display at Strood Sports Centre. En la tarde del 7 de noviembre de 2022, se inauguró una nueva exposición en el Museo Guildhall de Rochester titulada Isaac Newell: Más que un Nombre. Comisariada por Jon Rye, consultor deportivo externo de Medway Sport, la idea fue concebida por Adrian Pope. La exposición fue inaugurada oficialmente por Margarita Bitetti, tataranieta de Isaac Newell, una música que actualmente reside en Italia:
“La familia está agradecida de que Isaac Newell, su nombre y su legado finalmente estén regresando a su tierra natal. El nombre Newell es reconocido en todo el mundo por el fútbol, y gracias a esta exposición, el pionero Isaac Newell ha comenzado por fin a ser reconocido en el Reino Unido. Esperamos que esta exposición sea la primera de muchas colaboraciones entre nuestra familia y las instituciones inglesas para mantener activo el intercambio sobre la figura de Isaac Newell. El fútbol formaba parte de un proyecto educativo más amplio que Isaac y su esposa Ann Margaret (nacida en Londres en una familia alemana) llevaron adelante durante décadas.
