Isaac Newell was born 24 April 1853 in Strood, England and died on 16 October 1907 in Rosario, Argentina. During his lifetime, the story of an inspiration for football in Argentina was written.
At the age of 16, Isaac left Medway and travelled to Rosario, Argentina, where he attended night school and qualified as a teacher.
It was at night school that Isaac met his future wife, Anna Margaretha Jochimsen. They married in 1876, when Isaac was 23, and on 26 May 1878 their first child, Claudio Lorenzo Newell, was born. Both Anna and Isaac graduated as English teachers in 1878 and worked at the city’s Colegio San Bartolomé.
In 1884, Isaac Newell and his wife founded the Anglo Argentine Commercial College where he introduced football as part of the sporting life of the college. Isaac and Anna combined sport and education (with great success) to enhance the lives of children and young people. Their school was open to the diverse groups that populated the local area, without distinguishing between those who could pay the fee and those who could not. This was unusual practice at the time.
Isaac was among several British immigrants who brought football to Argentina, which now has the fifth-oldest football league in the world, created in 1891. Using his connections back in England, Isaac introduced many of the practices introduced by the new Football Association, which included the commissioning of the standardised leather ball from Porteño importer George Burton. Students soon enjoyed playing football and it was common for matches to be set up among the students in the courtyard of the college. The enthusiasm for the sport meant they quickly outgrew the courtyard and so a parcel of land was purchased next to the college to play football on.
In November 1903, Isaac's former students – led by his son Claudio – founded Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys, the name honouring the life and work of his father. To this day, the club provides football as an inspiration to many across the world, as well as elite-level sports facilities for the local community, life skills and values to young people through its football academies, and the education of future PE teachers through degree qualifications. Famous players and managers include: Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Maxi Rodrigues, Marcelo Bielsa, Mauricio Pochettino, and many more! The passion of Club Atlético Newellʼs Old Boys fans is felt across the world and Isaacʼs legacy is embraced by a worldwide community.

Isaac now rests in the Rosario Protestant Cemetery, about a mile from the 40,000-capacity Estadio Marcelo Bielsa ground where Newell’s Old Boys play. Each year, members of the Newell’s Old Boys Cultural Department join family members at the cemetery for a remembrance service on Isaac’s birthday.
