Margarita Bitetti Newell (the family - great-great-granddaughter!)
In typical Newell family tradition, my life has been dedicated to music and education. Indeed, when I was younger, the decision to move to Europe from my beloved Rosario, was prompted by the desire to perfect my musical training.

I am a specialist in the pedagogy of music, specifically in the area of teacher training, and have collaborated with various international institutions and conferences. In addition to this, I have published numerous books on music education, whilst maintaining an active career as a musician and concert performer.

Over the years the bond with my family in Argentina has remained strong and vibrant, but I have also continued to nurture our roots in Great Britain. As a descendant of Isaac Newell, I am both witness and keeper to my extraordinary family history, and I have made it my mission to ensure his extraordinary legacy continues. This is why I am so delighted to be able to support the various projects in Strood which are keeping Isaac’s memory alive, and proud to be a member of the Isaac Newell Heritage Group.

Siguiendo la típica tradición de la familia Newell, he dedicado mi vida a la música y a la educación. De hecho, cuando era más joven, la decisión de mudarme a Europa desde mi querida Rosario fue impulsada por el deseo de perfeccionar mi formación musical.

Soy especialista en pedagogía musical, específicamente en el área de formación docente, y he colaborado con diversas instituciones y congresos internacionales. Además de esto, he publicado numerosos libros sobre educación musical, al mismo tiempo que mantuve una activa carrera como música e intérprete en conciertos.

A lo largo de los años, el vínculo con mi familia en Argentina ha permanecido fuerte y lleno de vida, pero también he continuado cultivando nuestras raíces en el Reino Unido. Como descendiente de Isaac Newell, soy tanto testigo como guardiana de la extraordinaria historia de mi familia, y me he propuesto como misión asegurar que su legado siga vivo. Por eso me alegra profundamente poder apoyar los diversos proyectos que se están llevando a cabo en Strood para mantener viva la memoria de Isaac, y me enorgullece ser miembro del Isaac Newell Heritage group.

Jon Rye (the captain)
I started my career in Sports Development focussing on PE and School Sport through local authority, school sport partnerships and a national charity, before joining the Education Team at the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. An amazing experience. Over many years, I have specialised in creating, developing and delivering educational programmes and resources. In 2022, I was asked by Medway Sport to curate the 'Isaac Newell: more than a name' exhibiton at the Guildhall Museum in Rochester. Little did I know at the time, that Isaac used sport as a vehicle to educate and inspire children and young people, mirroring my own career. From the moment I met Adrian Pope, I was captivated by the story of Isaac Newell and knew I had to fulfil and celebrate his legacy.

Comencé mi carrera en el Desarrollo Deportivo, centrándome en la Educación Física y el Deporte Escolar a través de la administración local, asociaciones deportivas escolares y una organización benéfica nacional, antes de unirme al equipo educativo del Comité Organizador de los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Londres 2012. Una experiencia increíble. Durante muchos años, me he especializado en crear, desarrollar y ofrecer programas y recursos educativos. En 2022, Medway Sport me pidió que curara la exposición "Isaac Newell: más que un nombre" en el Museo Guildhall de Rochester. En ese momento no sabía que Isaac usó el deporte como una herramienta para educar e inspirar a niños, niñas y jóvenes, reflejando mi propia trayectoria profesional. In 2001, before leaving the Buenos Aires conurbation to head to Eldorado for work purposes, I saw a football team called Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys play an away game v Racing. It was later when I was working in Eldorado as an English teacher from Kent, that I became curious about the very British sounding name "Newell's Old Boys", and I discovered that the club was named after an English teacher... from Kent! I realised I could still see Newell's play at home on the last day of the football season, 1000 kilometres away in the city of Rosario, so I bought a coach ticket and packed my bags. I arrived there, I thought, a day early, only to discover that the game had been played on the Friday night for television purposes! But thus began a great love affair with "The Lepers".

En 2001, yo vivía en el cono urbano bonaerense, cuando vi a un equipo de fútbol llamado Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys jugar un partido contra Racing Club. Más tarde, estaba trabajando como profesor de inglés en la ciudad de Eldorado en el litoral de Argentina, y me llamó la atención el nombre tan británico "Newell's Old Boys". Fue entonces cuando descubrí que el club llevaba el nombre de un maestro de inglés nacido en Kent!. Me di cuenta de que estaba a tiempo para ver jugar a Newell's en Rosario, en el último partido de la temporada. Yo estaba a unos 1000 kilómetros de distancia, así que compré un boleto de autobús y empaqué mis maletas. Llegué a Rosario un día antes, solo para descubrir que el partido se había jugado el viernes por la noche por motivos televisivos. ¡A pesar de todo, fue así como comenzó mi gran romance con “la Lepra"!

I am an author, historian and linguist with a particular interest in social and medical history. I have written several books and am a regular contributor to television, radio and podcasts in the UK. My work is characterised by intensive research, leaving no stone unturned, and continually questioning why people make the choices they do in life. A native of Strood, I came across Isaac Newell’s story a few years ago and was fascinated. His story immediately resonated. I began writing about his life and much of this work was included in the ‘Isaac Newell: more than a name’ exhibition at the Guildhall Museum in Rochester. Then, following a talk I gave on Isaac in 2023, the Isaac Newell Heritage Group was born. Not long afterwards, I was asked by the Newell family to write his life story - Isaac Newell: the Authorised Biography.

Soy autora, historiadora y lingüista, con un interés particular en la historia social y médica. He escrito varios libros y colaboro regularmente en televisión, radio y pódcasts en el Reino Unido. Mi trabajo se caracteriza por una investigación exhaustiva, sin dejar ningún cabo suelto, y por cuestionar constantemente por qué las personas toman las decisiones que toman en la vida. Nativa de Strood, conocí la historia de Isaac Newell hace algunos años y me fascinó de inmediato. Su historia resonó profundamente en mí. Comencé a escribir sobre su vida y gran parte de ese trabajo se incluyó en la exposición “Isaac Newell: más que un nombre” en el Museo Guildhall de Rochester. Sandra Fowler (the networker)
I was a librarian/information officer by trade, with a few different job detours on the way and am now retired. I have worked as a local studies librarian and have retained an interest in local history, which somehow got me mixed up with the Isaac Newell Heritage Group. In terms of the Statue project, I have been very involved in the successful search to acquire a site for a statue of Isaac Newell, undertake research, network and do anything I can to persuade anyone and everyone to support our plans to celebrate the life and legacy of Isaac Newell with a statue in his birthplace.

Fui bibliotecaria y encargada de información de profesión, con algunos desvíos laborales en el camino, y ahora estoy jubilada. He trabajado como bibliotecaria especializada en estudios locales y he conservado un interés por la historia local, lo que de algún modo me llevó a participar en el Grupo de Patrimonio Isaac Newell. En cuanto al proyecto he estado muy involucrada en la exitosa búsqueda para adquirir un sitio donde erigir una estatua de Isaac Newell, realizar investigaciones, establecer contactos y hacer todo lo posible para convencer a cualquier persona de apoyar nuestros planes de celebrar la vida y el legado de Isaac Newell en su lugar de nacimiento.

Dr. Alexander Thomas (the historian)
I am an academic archaeologist and historian of Viking Age England but have advised on various heritage projects over my career. Two years ago – one lecture, one medieval manuscript, and one cup of tea later – I found myself part of the Isaac Newell Heritage Group, before I even knew quite what was happening! Isaac’s story as a fellow educator continues to resonate with me, as does the challenge of translating that legacy into the broader Medway landscape. My role in the Group has so far been to support its efforts to broaden public awareness and recognition, and to encourage deeper heritage engagement with Newell’s legacy.
